GroundWorks DanceTheater’s spring 2013 schedule will kick off with performances at the Breen Center for the Performing Arts in Cleveland and at the Akron-Summit County Public Library. The performances at both venues will feature the world premieres of a newly commissioned work by guest choreographer Kate Weare, and “LUNA” by GroundWorks Artistic Director David Shimotakahara, with original music by composer Peter V. Swendsen, a professor at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. The program also includes “Brubeck,” Shimotakahara’s vibrant and acclaimed tribute to American Jazz icon Dave Brubeck.

In April, GroundWorks and the Akron Symphony Orchestra celebrate the 100th anniversary of Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” at E.J. Thomas Hall with a new dance by Shimotakahara. Hailed as one of the most influential musical works of the 20th century, “Rite of Spring” contains many features that were novel for its time, including experiments in tonality, meter, rhythm, stress and dissonance.
